WORLD HERITAGE | Las Médulas

Las Médulas (León)
Las Médulas is a landscape enviroment formed by an ancient Roman opencast mining of gold, situated in El Bierzo, in Castilla y León. It’s considered the largest gold opencast mine of the whole Roman Empire.
The extraction of this mineral meant the alteration of the enviroment, giving as result a landscape of reddish grounds covered by chestnut and oak trees.
It was declared in 1997 World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its important archaeological interest.
